Laphroaig 10 at 40% ABV is the standard bearer for the brand. The go to bottle for medicinal peat treats this Christmas. The small batch releases of Cask Strength is like what you buy when you want to up your game and overwhelm your senses.
Batch 16 was bottled in 2022 and is still available to buy. Each release will have small differences and some bottles go for very big money at auction. This one is just over £70 retail but a 2000’s bottle is retailing at £800 on Master of Malt just now as well. I doubt its 10 times as good but good for a collector I guess.
Tasting Notes
| Colour | Marmalade orange |
| Nose | Iodine, sticking plasters and fabric bandages Fresh churned butter and dirty sooty peat smoke |
| Palate | fruity notes of dry cider, butter pastries which are slightly burnt, more iodine and the whiff of a dr’s office |
| Finish | Long finish with a touch of gingerbread and the dirty peat smoke notes linger for hours and annoy your household |
Where Can I Buy?
Batches are available yearly but this specific batch is still available on Master of Malt’s website
Master of Malt – Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength
Final Thoughts
I haven’t had much Laphroaig for a few years but the flavours are so distinctive and so powerful that they trigger memories. When sitting with this glass I was thrown back to when I wrote this article Laphroaig PX Cask and was disappointed by Laphroaig Lore because its nothing like the 18 it was designed to replace. Few other distilleries can do that as easily and I would buy a full bottle of any of the cask strengths if I saw them on a shelf
