Speaking of Rye whisky on Monday this English Rye whisky is now double relevant or maybe been triple relevant. The Fielden brand name is the output from the Oxford Artisan Distillery or at least that is what it used to be called. IF you are a regular reader you will know the Oxford Artisan 3 Year Old 2019 Single Cask was one of my surprise stand out whiskies from last year. This Fielden is the core range from the new company which owns the distillery.

The brand and distillery were also in the news recently. In the article linked above I talked about the original founder trying to buy the distillery back before it was moved from Oxford into Yorkshire and now that owners are selling up because of cashflow issues to one of these marketing agency type companies which hoover up start up brands they think they can grow. More info can be found at: Fielden whisky sold to brand development agency GHF drinks | The Grocer

Enough of the politics though…the cool thing about Fielden is they use only organic Rye and only that sourced in England from old traditional strains of crops. Or at least that is what they did before the buy out (sorry more politics)

The Whisky

Bottled at 47% ABV and priced around £50 its a hard thing to find being produced in low volumes and released in smaller amounts. The big online retailers are your best bet or if you are local to the area I’d imagine indi shops will stock it in both Oxford and Yorkshire at this point.

Tasting Notes

Colourbright yellow
Noseapple crumble, fresh pastry, caramel
PalateNutty and more caramel, nut brittle, fresh yeasty dough and spearmint
FinishSickly sweet birthday cake with all the E numbers

toasted peppercorns at the very end

Where Can I Buy?

There is a few retailers still with stock and rather than shout out to a big brand I wanted to focus on a very small indi shop from someone I have admired. Ben Bowers runs Spirit Specialist and I have low admired in old YouTube channel, passion and well spirit.

Final Thoughts

Since I’m lazy I will use Ben’s comments on this bottle as my final thoughts.

I really hope Fielden manages to figure out a way through the current issues and continue to produce spirit, because this is bloody great!

  1. Fielden is a damn fine Rye & it would be sad to see it go.
