This is my go to bottle in a bar in a hotel. A reliable decently priced by the glass bottle which isn’t too complex, isn’t too aggressive but still feels like it’s an event. Sounds simple to do but is complicated to execute at scale.

With that kind of introduction you would have expected this to be like the 5th article on this bottle but oddly not. I had to check though because genuinely I was sure I have written similar words on Clynelish before. Anyway, Clynelish is the distillery still operating from across the road to the now closed Brora in the Highlands and where Brora will cost you thousands Clynelish is banged out in such vast quantities its hard to find a Diageo blend or a Compass Box release which doesn’t include it.

Bottled at 46% ABV and available for similar money to the Moch from yesterday. Both bottles are of course owned by the same company so could this much older, stronger bottle be a better purchase?

Tasting Notes

Colouryellow to almost orange
Nosetangerine, a tiny amount of smoke you could almost miss for toasted oak, white pepper and sporadic bursts of orange zest
PalateToasted oak and smoke are a little more pronounced on the palate. More of the citric orange notes and some vanilla extract

Texture is quite thin
FinishSweet and sour finish. sweet bites initially then it twists to bitter and sour with some peppery steak spiciness.

The delta from sweet to sour is still quite narrow

Where Can I Buy?

Pretty much anywhere outside of the supermarkets and small shops. Most bottle shops will stock this.

Master of Malt Clynelish 14

Final Thoughts

A good solid bottle of whisky and probably the best value 14 year old age statement core range bottle anywhere on the market. If only all Diageo bottles could hit so many marks on a single SKU.

  1. Brora reopened in 2021.
Will still cost you thousands for a bottle though. And hundreds even to get in for a visit.

  3. Damn so it is.

Completely forgot all about this! Checked out the prices, cheapest visit is £125 which includes 1 dram in the warehouse. Next tour is £450 for 4 samples from 4 releases.

I can’t imagine the tours are regularly sold out
