When I got a a sample of 12 year old Aberfeldy I was sure it was something I had tried before. One of the first reasons for starting this blog though was to solve this problem. A search of past posts for Aberfeldy though bore no fruit so we have another excuse to make some moderately average content again.

FYI: Other Aberfeldy related content can be found using this link. https://malted.blog/?s=Aberfeldy

In the 16 year old I spoke about Aberfeldy being supermarket standard stock but since 2018. I actually don’t even think that is true anymore. I can’t actually remember that last time I saw it stocked in a Scottish supermarket. ASDA online is showing a deal for 25 pounds just now but if I login the product disappears so I guess not around here.

As it goes though if you do have the option to pick this up at under 30 then I would definitely go for it. It’s a spicy relaxed whisky which doesn’t feel as watery or underwhelming as my commentary on the 16 had so more fun for less money. Very few of those options available to us in the post Truss United Kingdom.

My Notes

Colour – E150a

Nose – caramel notes and crisp apples but almost cider like in nature with a touch of barley and straw

Palate – initial taste is of honey and black pepper. Standard notes I know but they are executed well, this is a nice enjoyable whisky to pickup and relax with. No thinking required.

Finish – Quite short, doesn’t hang around for a second go around

Final Thoughts

At full price of just a touch under 50 pounds, is there better value to be had? Almost certainly. Are those bottles easy to find and readily available without strong knowledge of the market. Probably not.

That is maybe more a comment on the state of the retail market that so few stunning whiskies can be found outside of specialist shops with knowledgeable staff. If you are near one though you should pop in and ask what’s worth buying.
