The second sample from festival 2021 is the Moine one. Moine being the Gaelic for peat so this is the peaty finisher to the set of course.

This red wine finished peated whisky is the younger and more affordable whisky of the two. I am hoping it will also be the more interesting because the much more expensive one on Monday: Bunnahabhain Marsala Cask – Feis Ile 2021 was painfully expensive and insipidly boring.

Not to labour on that one though and looking forward to the Moine Bordeaux it is a 2013 vintage bottled at 59.5%ABV and there is still bottles to be found as old stock or collector stock at around 80-90 pounds.

Distillery Notes

Nose: Light toasted oak, red fruits leading to a sweet, dark fruit jam and a hint of dry smoke

Palate: Peat smoke, oak spice, dark grapes, cocoa and red chili, with a delicately balanced sweetness and acidity.

Finish: Long and sweet, with hints of red wine and over-ripened grapes.

Official Notes

Colour – Irn-Bru

Nose – toasted nuts but still ultimately smells very sweet and syrupy but ultimately the Bunna woody hickory smoke still comes though

Palate – still a hickory smoke spirit forward whisky but while the smoke is thick and dense its not overpowering the thick syrupy fruity notes. I have had red wine finished Caol Ila for example which doesn’t work because the vegetal peaty notes in the spirit overpower and clash with the red fruit punchbowl cask maturation

Finish – the youth is most obvious in the finish. prickles and spicy where some of the balance disappears. Short as well

Final Thoughts

A nice Bunnahabhain in single digits of age. I think though to be honest the standard NAS Moine from Bunnahabhain is just as good and half the price.
