If there was ever a bottle I am a sucker for it’s the cask strength one at a decent price. Friar John Cor bottle is that one in the run for me. This John Cor one though is extra interesting because beside the usual ex-bourbon barrels and increasingly utilised STR casks we have peated Rum to play with as well.

This particular bottle is a batch run and the run I am trying now is the second batch. If you can find it on a shelf somewhere expect to pay under £70.

The introduction of the peated casks which originally held rum, gives a very exciting point of difference to our unpeated spirit. The end result is just fantastic with a complex Whisky with syrupy fruity sweetness balanced perfectly with deep earthy peated notes that compliment perfectly in this unique Lindores Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Official Website

Nose – fruity tropical notes. charred pineapple and BBQ’d mango. The underlying mineral notes from the spirit though are still there.

Palate – It’s cask strength and at a youthful 60.9% ABV there is no room for hero’s. Get the water out and slowly bring the tempo down. Pulling it open will bring out rock salt and banana, dark sugar. If you are buying this looking for a peated Lindores you are in the wrong house. The peated flavours in the wood have long since had their vibrant peak but their subtle aged vegetal notes do come through to give an earthy nature which duets nicely with the mineral nature of the spirit

Finish – Those Rum casks do lengthen out the palate into the finish. Vegetal peatiness with lots of sweet sugar notes to boot. Ultimately though this is young whisky so fast maturation can only get you so far

Final Thoughts

I like it a lot and I found it much more engaging and interesting than say the general release version of Lindores. Great value, cool bottle and unusual cask mix what more could someone ask for.
