I picked this Speyburn up for two reasons. The first reason was I didn’t think I had tried it before and it turns out that was false. I had a sample of this in an advent calendar 4 years ago and my thoughts then can be found here: Advent Day 11: Speyburn 10 Year Old
The second reason was I like Glengoyne a lot and I have tried an awful lot of their bottles in the last few years. I found some of the older stuff quite expensive in 2016/2017 but now in 2023 bottles I could afford I just simply cannot. That is a real shame and I don’t think its sustainable. If you want to see what I think of Glengoyne though this filtered list should help: https://malted.blog/?s=glengoyne
So why did I buy Speyburn when I like Glengoyne? well my reckoning was they might have a similar flavour profile and inverhouse are still doing good quality products at fair prices.
The Whisky
Standard 10 year old from the range is bottled at 40% and available for around the 20/25 pound mark when it is on offer at the supermarket. The bottle is a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks and while none of that might turn the world alight it is a good popular combination
Tasting Notes
Colour – pale yellow
Nose – sickly sweet with a touch of wood and spice.
Palate – sherry oak maturation is obvious. the sharp fruit note of plump fruits fatten by booze. a watery note
Finish – short finish but pleasant not rough edge
Final Thoughts
Reminds me a lot of a Aberlour 12 or a Glengoyne 12. Both far more expensive than this
