A few months back there was a thread going around of a whisky shop assistant shitting on Glenallachie and people who buy their bottles. I won’t bore you with the details but it basically boiled down to a simple:

“Real men don’t drink Glenallachie”

The justification for this is baked in the 1970’s as well. It goes like this, Glenallachie bottles are mostly all the same technique – lots of vibrant first fill sherry finishes to smash you over the head with a sweet fruity sherry like whisky. Therefore, if the drink is sweet it can’t be for men cos men don’t do sweet.

All of which is bullshit of course, the Glenallachie rebrand under the new ownership has been successful. The formula is very similar to the Bruichladdich revival before the buyout but I’d suggest maybe done in a more slick professional fashion over the Reynier Laddie era and outselling them as well.

The 12 year old is a core bottling featuring the house style and therefore incorporates a lot of wood influence and flavour in the profile. The makeup includes PX Sherry, Oloroso Sherry and Virgin oak barrels. As I mentioned yesterday that Virgin oak is giving me negative vibes but still hoping for the best.

Final Thoughts

There is no denying this is good whisky. There is tons and tons of bottle available especially at auction which means that on a quiet month there is more bottles than buyers and good bargains can be had. You could probably pick this up for less than £40 or even a single cask verison.
