Am I right in thinking this is the first peated whisky this month? Weird because before you connect Christmas with heavily sherried whisky for me you go to wood fires on a cold night and peated whisky.

Caol Ila is one under rated whisky on Islay for me. Sure, there is a lot of the stuff around and they fairly fire it through the stills and off the island for centralised warehousing in the central belt of Scotland but its damn good stuff. Not over the top and intense but balance and refined. Good in a blend and as a standalone whisky.

By now Moch has been around for over 10 years and I still remember when it was released back when everyone was knocking out new NAS whiskies. Some of those others have gone but Moch remains as a lighter style whisky. The price has shot up though to over £50 a bottle which is a bit of a surprise. I was expecting to see a pricetag somewhere in the £35 bracket. £50 is a congested market of some excellent offerings and I am not sure this Moch (Dawn in english) can stack up against the competition.

Final Thoughts

It did kind of grow on my by the end of the dram but honestly I can’t make an argument on spending £50+ on this bottle. The exact same experience at a higher ABV could be had from any single digit aged Caol Ila from an Indi bottler.
