Glen Moray has to be one of the most underrated distilleries which bottle their own single malt. Priced aggressively with a lot of first fill casks especially in their younger bottles this is a distillery brand which is determined to carve a niche for themselves.
If I had a name another brand which has tried a similar tactic but I would say has sold out on us since is Bunnahabhain and Deanston. Both owned by the same company there was a definite concerted effort to market flavourful, available and affordable whiskies in the 2018-2020 era but now there is an awful lot of over pricing going on.
The Whisky
This bottle I picked up from Morrisons maybe a year ago and its still available in supermarkets, convenience shops and whisky retailers. It’s so good on multiple fronts that it earns its SKU in all these types of retailers. Sitting without an age statement but mentioning Cognac casks its bottled at 40% and uses a bit of artificial colouring.
Interestingly, this expression is not even listed on the Glen Moray website. I hope they aren’t embarrassed by it because it really is rather good. It does mean though I don’t know much else about it
Tasting Notes
| Colour | A little orange |
| Nose | Fruity and spicy: Raisins and sultanas, toasted bread, dark chocolate. Rich and thick |
| Palate | More of those raisin and sultana notes, thick treacle and runny caramel |
| Finish | Coffee beans, Toasted bread and a little oak sap |
Where Can I Buy?
Any UK Supermarket – This reminds me; Christmas is coming up and I will try and do some Buy/Avoid deal tracker posts in the run up to Christmas to help with gift giving
Final Thoughts
Glen Moray does it again. This is a distillery I should get to visit they have an active visitor centre staff on social media and generally all seem a sound bunch. I believe, rightly or wrongly, that ex manager Graham Coull did a lot for raising the standards at the distillery and pushing out a bunch of experiments and trials which are now coming on the market.
Its a credit to all that the journey they all set out on together is being continued under new leadership.
