As is traditional in any whisky flight – end with a peaty one.
The Fumare is the first peated single malt from the distillery. This is from small pockets of distillate which is produced yearly alongside the main runs of unpeated barley.
This cask strength, unchill-filtered, whisky with no added colouring is full term matured in ex-bourbon barrels. A total of 1500 individually numbers bottles are available for ~£70.
Colour Light gold appearance,
Nose – with a subtle nose. The delicate character of the spirit is evident, though it’s very clear that this is a peated whisky.
Palate – The smoke slowly builds in intensity, but with minimal medicinal notes, and increased sweetness. The addition of a few drops of water increase the complexity, and enhance the sweetness & vanilla notes that combine so well with the long, smoky finish.
Official Tasting Notes
Colour – Almost clear
Nose – smoky sure but shy. A Smoky burning wood smoke but not ashy
Palate – crisp apples and some vanilla custard.
Finish – lingering lemon acidity and woody smoke
Final Thoughts
This is young peated whisky where the underlying original new make spirit is adding character to the finished whisky. If this was even a tenner cheaper it would be a more compelling purchase for me.
