This is another Whisky Cellar bottle which is available now from a selected range of stockists. For more information on the stockists and “The Whisky Cellar” you can check out an earlier article from here The Whisky Cellar Private Cellars Selection – Glentauchers 12Yo
The Distillery
The bottle I am looking at just now might be an independent single cask rather than an official release from the distillery but lets dig into what Glenburgie is.
Glenburgie is the distillery which produces malt whisky for the Ballentine’s brands of blends. There is little single malt out in the open market and even less in the independent space. For this 28 year old to appear on the market is quite the exciting product then. To put it into context, at the time of writing, there are 16 single cask bottles and nothing core range or ongoing release on Master of Malt’s website. That includes an old old bottle from 1966 at £1000 which really puts it in the “never to be opened” bracket.
The distillery itself was founded in 1829 but the distillery that stands today is not that same building. The current building is from 2004 and cost over £4 millions including the addition of 2 new stills. Thus bringing the total to four stills. The investment wasn’t done there though because 24 months later another 2 stills were installed which was probably a function of waiting times and construction latency.
The Whisky
Distilled in 1995 and bottled in 2023. This single cask release is available for £210 for one of the 205 bottles that came from an ex-bourbon barrel. If you do pick one up it will be at natural cask strength which is 52.8% ABV
Tasting Notes
Colour – pale yellow
Nose – rich ginger and buttery toast, some spring cut grass and cracked lemongrass
Palate – lemon sherbet, heavy oak tannin notes, gooseberry jam
Finish – A finish which goes on for days. There will be a fizzy jammy buttery toasty symphony going on for days
Final Thoughts
A real privilege to try such a rare and old whisky. There is always whiskies which are just a bit different and out there. I once had a single cask bottle from Bruichladdich called X4+9 and even though it was a lifetime ago I still remember it and there is notes in that which were pretty unique and they are here as well.
