Welcome back to week 2 of Canada Monday.
As I sit down to write about this Killeigh and survey the detail on the label the one thing I am really noticing even on the mini bottle is just how nice it is. A square bottle with a weighty base this is no cheap urine sample bottle design.
For more detailed information on the distillery see last weeks article.
The Whisky
Ok then here we go. Cask’s in the mix this time are:
1) Bourbon
2) Muscatel
3) Virgin Oak
Usual Macaloney spec applies so natural colour, non-chill filtered and 46% ABV.
Tasting Notes
Colour – light watery yellow
Nose – really interesting. green nettles and white grape, mixed citric rinds. grapefruit
Palate – spicy and tannin. a drying whisky with lots of cinnamon butter and caramel.
Finish – very drying finish which ends with a very burnt toast note
Final Thoughts
This is the current winner so far. Where An Loy was predictable and safe maybe this is really interesting and challenging. Virgin oak is a powerful but dangerous weapon to deploy where over oaking is easy and you end up with a generic hot bourbon. Balanced by muscatel the virgin oak is just on the right side with a defined character but without overpowering the other components.
