Possibly one of the weirdest names for a whisky which just seems like a splash of random adjectives onto a label.
Is that unfair? Probably.
Anyway, on with the show
The Whisky
This product’s heritage dates back 1963 when Masataka Taketsuru, founder of Nikka Whisky, lost his wife. This blend was a creation he made which channeled his love and admiration for his wife who was a deep supporter of her husband and enabled him to build his distilleries in Japan not least using inheritance money she got from family. In researching this whisky I read about Scottish born Rita Taketsuru (1896-1961) had the most interesting life and goes on the backlog of things I should write about soon.
The product you can buy today was previously discontinued but appears to be back for around £50 in the uk. Complete in an old style swing bottle that you can also see in some limited edition Johnny Walker bottles this is a whisky playing on nostalgia.
Tasting Notes
Producer Notes
Super Nikka is a classic style of blended whisky with gentle peatiness and hints of vanilla and sherry.
These beautiful flavors are rounded and well-balanced with a smooth texture and mellow mouthfeel
Our Notes
Colour – marmalade orange
Nose – very subtle and restrained. Apple pie and more butter pastry with slightly burnt edges. Cinnamon
Palate – while the nose might be tight the notes are flowing now. Heather honey, rich malted biscuits and orange peel. Medium weight
Finish – palate notes flow into the finish with new notes of pepper, charred oak.
Conclusions
There is nothing bad about this whisky and it is definitely a traditional style of blended whisky from the days before cheap blends went truly awful. If these older styles of bottles are your thing then this could be something to try. It’s not my vibe though and that is ok.
